Originating in Norway or Denmark, the Hovedvandsaeg served as a token of love or affection. The earliest forms were heart-shaped, with hinged lids and gilt interiors, held smelling salts or aromatic vinegar.
This is a particularly fine example, with seamed body, banded, double-heart motif, crown finial, and original gilding and hinge intact. This, like many others, is unmarked.
3" length, 2" width. 1.6 troy ounces.
