In Chinese mythology, the number of dragon toes is a key indicator of its status. Five-toed dragons symbolize the Emperor, while four-toed dragons represent nobility, high officials, or members of the imperial family. Three-toed dragons were used for lower ranks and the general public.

The dragons featured on this tong have four toes.
