This tablespoon exhibits the techniques of applique in the handle's mask and repousse in the bowl's fruit when it was adorned a couple of generations after its creation. This process, known as "Victorianizing", involved embellishing or altering objects to reflect the ornate and elaborate designs characteristic of the Victorian era. Silversmiths achieved this goal in silver by adding intricate engravings, floral motifs, or decorative embellishments to plain surfaces. It was a period marked by an emphasis on opulence and romanticism, and the practice of victorianizing silver imbues pieces with historical charm and aesthetic richness. Though some purists argue that modifying antique silver diminishes its authenticity, others see it as a way to preserve and celebrate the artistic styles of a bygone era.
