Sterling Silver Hand Wrought Jefferson Cup, Old Newberry Crafters, Newburyport, MA, 20th Century
This circular form with pronounced hammer marks takes its name after John Letelier’s commission from Thomas Jefferson. The president wrote, “ I think those should be made out of 5 oz. avoirdupoise weight nearly. they must be about half an inch higher in order to hold a little bit more than the model does in every respect I wish the model to be exactly imitated.” Six of the eight cups that Jefferson commissioned survive. They measure 2 5/8” height and 4.8 avoirdupois ounces.
Old Newbury Crafters has been hand crafting silver for over 100 years.
2 3/4” height, 3 1/4” top diameter. 4.92 troy ounces.
