Austria-Hungarian Solid Silver Scent Bottle, Leutschau, Circa 1895

In the shape of a bellow adorned with a repousse scene of a couple, two putti, and a bird against a lush landscape. This originally suspended from a chatelaine.

One author described a chatelaine as a customized version of a Swiss Army knife. In 1828, the World of Fashion used the term “la Chaterlaine” for a device that clipped onto a woman’s waistband and had domestic or personal items suspended from long chains, such as keys, dance cards, pencils, watches and perfume vials, like this Austria-Hungarian example. In their day, these items were as necessary as our app-ladened phones are today.

4" length, 2" width. 1.34 troy ounces.
