The Luckenbooth brooch is a traditional Scottish love token. It takes its name from the Scottish word for lockable stalls or workshops that lines the Royal Mile beginning in the fifteenth century. Many of the shops sold these smal tokens of love and devotion. Their form expanded from a traditional heart-shaped brooch to a Mary Queen of Scots pin, shown here. One legend states that the design originated from a gift to Lord Darnley from Mary Queen of Scots. Another legend states that it was a gift to Mary from her husband, Francis II of France.
