Hester Needham or Neden married John Bateman, a chainmaker, on May 20, 1732. He left his tools to his wife upon his death in 1760. She struggled to build the business with her sons, incorporating the latest technology to produce elegant, inexpensive wares. Though illiterate, Hester's success stemmed from her business acumen and marketing to England's newly affluent middle class. Following her retirement in 1790, the Bateman shop remained an institution among English silversmiths until the mid nineteenth century.

5 3/4" length, 1/4" width. 1.11 troy ounces.
