The line focused on the texture and aesthetics produced by the primarily tool used: the hammer. Martele masterfully illustrates the juxtaposition of the hammer's strength and rigidity with its ability to create a soft, mist-like finish on forms comprised of graceful forms and elements of nature. Subtle hammer marks in the silver's surface and detailed hand chasing add to each piece's unique identity. A coffee pot could be raised in one week and chased with an additional week of labor. A pepper shaker could be raised in three days and chased in two.

Chief executive Edward Holbrook and his chief designer from England, William Christmas Codman, directed the raising, hammering and chasing of 4,800 "works of art in silver". Holbrook received the highest civilian honor given by the French government: Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur. Codman won a gold medal. Traditionally, riders enjoyed spirits from these ornately crafted vessels before hunting expeditions or long journeys. The term "stirrup cup" originates from the practice of serving a final drink to someone who was already mounted and ready to depart, with their feet in the stirrups. They were often made of silver and intricately decorated, frequently taking the form of animal heads such as foxes, stags, or hounds, symbolizing the connection to hunting culture. The popularity of stirrup cups spread beyond Great Britain, with variations appearing in other cultures such as the French chasse-cuillère (hunt spoon) and the German trinkhörner (drinking horns). These cultures also incorporated their own unique designs and symbols into these drinking vessels. Over time, these cups have transitioned from practical items to collectible pieces, valued for their historical and artistic significance.

In addition to being used as parting gifts for riders, stirrup cups also became a staple at formal hunting events where they presided over toasts and celebratory drinks among fellow hunters. Irish decorative arts benefited tremendously from the prevailing state of a wealthy land aristocracy, occupying a land with a fortuitously talented and well educated population, yet impoverished. There were fewer Silversmith in Dublin than in England or America, resulting in smaller output and consequently less availability.

Identifiable Irish silver dates back to the Royal charter of the company of Goldsmith of Dublin in 1637. Heavy-gauged, plain forms characterized the earliest Irish silver, and were mostly used for church wares such as chalices, communion cups, and plates. Huguenot silversmiths fleeing from France after 1685 brought new idea, ideas and refinement preparing Irish Silver to flourish in the approaching age of elegance.

Irish Silversmith embraced, even led the exuberant aesthetic of the mid eighteenth century Rococo style. New lifestyles demanded new accoutrements, and domestic silver soon included tea and coffee, pots jugs, spoons, serving utensils, solvers, caddies, tureens, tankards, and mugs. As the century passed and empires turned, Irish silversmiths became masters of the refined Neoclassical Movement before coming into their own with the sociopolitically important Celtic Revival.

Irish silver developed outside of the close control of the English guilds. It, therefore, enjoys more freedom in design. The Irish silversmiths’ spirit of independence seems to align closer to American artists in style than their British contemporaries. Irish silver work is grander, ornate yet symmetrical, bold yet gracious.
